After Hammurabi's death, rule passed to his son, Samsu-iluna, who faced multiple revolts by the southern city-states, as documented in this (somewhat controversial) statue inscription by Lambert and Weeden 2020: Fig. 1, which led to the rise of new independent dynasties in Sumer as well as Assyria.

Most maps of any ancient empire will show something more like this one (credit: MapMaster CC-BY-SA 4.0), with darker orange areas showing Babylon's power upon Hammurabi's ascension in 1792 BCE and lighter orange areas showing the extent of his power ca. 1750 BCE (at the end of his reign).
