I think we’re 3-5 years away from it being crowned a genre classic. It was doing something a little too new, challenged expectations a little too much, to be instantly canonized.

I don’t know if it technically counts as a Chapelle Show quote or an A Time to Kill quote, but I’m surprised at how many occasions I find to say, “Yes they deserved to die, and I hope they burn in hell!”

That said, I definitely do it as Chapelle as Samuel L Jackson as Carl Lee Hailey.

Like jazz, man. It’s the notes you don’t play.

Extremely common! I’ll also add that many parents will still choose being at work for 8 hours (interacting with adults) and being home with two toddlers for 8 hours over being at home with two toddlers for 16 hours.

That said, FT care (7am to 6pm) in my area (suburban SW US) runs about $1400/mo. Multiply x2 kids and you’re there.

You get a break when school starts, but after care (3:30 to 5:30) still runs about $600/mo. Then you eat it in the summer since day camps can be anywhere from $500 to infinity/week.

Keep in mind that lots of households simply can’t afford childcare at all, so the median household likely isn’t paying the “average” childcare costs. The ranges are off set.

So fun to roleplay those types. It’s like, wow, this is how stress free life would be if I had no grasp of nuance or skepticism of authority.

Loved this episode! Great primer on why we do what we do, and some great recommendations to boot.

Also, it put some important context around my 350-title collection for my wife. No, it’s not “getting out of hand.” Not even close, baby!

It’s nice that he included the sentence right before your highlighted one so that no one has any doubt who wrote this.

And unsanctioned psykers are “creatives” (dependent on unreliable patronage, accepted substance abuse, always on the verge of insanity, constantly struggling with their unrealized potential)

Don’t think we disagree on the inevitable outcome. I just think it’s weird to say, “there was no conspiracy; party bosses just got together independent of the electorate and convinced candidates to drop out before they otherwise would have.” Is it because the rooms probably weren’t literally smoky?
May 25, 2025 at 1:43 AM
I don’t see how you can say Pete and Amy were persuaded to drop out (even if it was easy) then turn right around and say there was no conspiracy.

It wasn’t nefarious, and it’s basically what all political parties do (try to win), but the party bosses DID get together to influence the primary.
May 25, 2025 at 1:37 AM
But none of this addresses why there had to be any effort by the party to get them to drop out. Yes, they didn’t have the support that Biden did, so fine, let them keep running and keep losing until they decide to quit. Why the arm twisting to get them to both drop out at the same time?

And the details! Terry’s shaking hand as the adrenaline and fear kick in. The trembling face as the 10-59 is called in. Just the best.

Inevitable comparisons to First Blood and complaints that Rebel Ridge didn’t have the scale of action or the dramatic retribution of that movie. I actually think it presents a more interesting proposition: what if Rambo cared about his life and didn’t want to spend the rest of it in prison?

Would love to have a physical media release so I don’t have to depend on corporate whims to make sure it stays available. Would also love to see it in a packed theater.
