Ken why ask such insouciant rhetorical questions about Saudi support of the 911 hijackers when we know Prince Bhandar (aka Bandhar Bush) and Princess Haifa did fund key hijackers like Nawaf Al Hazmi and Khalid Al-Mihdar. According to author Joe Trento they were agents of Saudi intelligence. They were protected by the FBI, by the DIA, they were protected from the Able Danger operation, and they lived with an FBI informant in San Diego. Israel was clearly involved in some way in 911 and you don’t have to be a member of a marginal Arab media group to say so. Just look at the East Rutherford police records! East Rutherford, New Jersey police arrested five celebrating Israelis, on the morning of 911 who were videotaping the attacks from across the harbor. They were intelligence agents and that’s why the FBI counterintelligence took over the case, until Michael Cheroff intervened, and then all five Israelis were deported without a trial. Sources on this include The Forward, of all places. There’s a good documented paper trail on this and you should look into it. It starts with the East Rutherford police records. I can help you get those. Otherwise, good article. I learned a few things. I’ve written two books about 911, personally. I enjoyed your article because it pointed out that there are still a lot of rocks to turn over. But I’m not sure you see all the rocks either.

All you are is a means of production. You supply the workforce. As soon as you stop supplying, you are of no more value. So anyway. That’s not a vision I like, not for my daughter, not for yours. I want my vote to count, I want my neighbors to be safe, I want all marginalized groups to be treated like the full, equal human beings they are, I’d like to breathe clean air and to know my kids will be able to do that, too. I’d like the kids whose parents support this insanity to be able to breathe clean air and have access to a good education and all the other good things, too - it isn’t their fault their parents have gotten sucked into the biggest con I’ve ever seen in my life. The Constitution disappeared from the Library of Congress for a few hours this week, did you hear? Not all of it, just the part that has to do with habeas corpus and the foreign emoluments clause. Weird coincidence. People noticed right away, and raised the alarm. The Library of Congress said it was a “coding issue” and restored the missing parts after a number of hours went by, but this story stinks, folks. It is not credible, not to any coders who have been interviewed. It’s alarming the way it was alarming when the Smithsonian tried to rewrite history and delete the current president’s impeachments. I don’t know what has to happen for his supporters to snap out of the orange haze, maybe nothing will do it, but I sure hope those of you who aren’t really “into politics” start to get engaged. Antisemitism and anti-Zionism are strange bedfellows.
One explanation is that antisemitism has become conflated with the divisive politics of the current Israel-Hamas war. It is certainly true that criticism of the Israeli government is not the same thing as antisemitism. This editorial board has long defended Israel’s right to exist while also criticizing the government for its treatment of Palestinians. Since the current war began, we have abhorred the mass killing of civilians and the destruction of Gaza. Israel’s reflexive defenders are wrong, and they hurt their own cause when they equate all such arguments with antisemitism. But some Americans have gone too far in the other direction. They have engaged in whataboutism regarding anti-Jewish hate. They have failed to denounce antisemitism in the unequivocal ways that they properly denounce other bigotry. Natan Sharansky, the former Soviet dissident, has suggested a “3D” test for when criticism of Israel crosses into antisemitism, with the D’s being delegitimization, demonization and double standards. Progressive rhetoric has regularly failed that test in recent years. “Americans generally have greater ability to identify Jew hatred when it comes from the hard right and less ability and comfort to call out Jew hatred when it comes from the hard left or radical Islamism,” said Rachel Fish, an adviser to Brandeis University’s Presidential Initiative on Antisemitism. Consider the double standard that leads to a fixation on Israel’s human rights record and little campus activism about the records of China, Russia, Sudan, Venezuela or almost any other country. Consider how often left-leaning groups suggest that the world’s one Jewish state should not exist and express admiration for Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis — Iran-backed terrorist groups that brag about murdering Jews. And what of the people themselves? The politicians themselves matter like sailboats. They can steer, but they cannot create the wind. The voters want what they want; they can be manipulated to some extent, but in general, not by that much. That leads to the question. Is Mamdani is a sign of things to come, or a one-off? Are the people demanding something different, or was he merely a particularly skillful pilot? I don’t know. Since 2019, this newsletter has looked at America through the lens of monopolistic corporations. That was in part because we had allies at antitrust agencies, so I could more easily explain the connection between legal enforcement and the world in which we live. I’ll still use that lens, but I’m going to start taking a broader definition of monopolization, economic tyranny, and rents. We’ve accomplished a great deal with antitrust, all the more impressive because we didn’t have a big popular electoral mandate behind us. Now I see faint signs of a real political rebellion brewing. I don’t know when it’ll occur, and I don’t know how. But the people are mad. And in America, that does matter.

In America today, we have many of the same challenges faced in George’s day. There’s an out-of-control financial sector engaging in speculation over resources that should be managed for the public good, not just land, but things like data, natural resources, knowledge, and even low orbit space and the atmosphere. And there is an undercurrent of unsatisfied rage. Joe Biden had some populists in his administration, but did not run as a populist, and neither have most Democrats. Trump did run as an economic populist, but with the latest legislation passed yesterday, it’s clear that he is not governing as one.

Dispensationalism emerged prominently in the 19th century with John Nelson Darby, an Anglo-Irish theologian who emphasized literal interpretations of biblical prophecy, particularly the apocalyptic visions in the Book of Revelation. His views were further popularized by the Scofield Reference Bible (1909), edited by Cyrus I. Scofield, which became the Bible of choice for millions of evangelical Christians, particularly in the United States. Scofield’s Bible annotated the text with dispensationalist interpretations, firmly entrenching these views in American evangelical culture. Dispensationalism takes the prophecies in the book of Revelations literally. Adherents to the tradition believe in a fiery apocalypse that would make Dante’s Inferno seem like a holiday at the beach by comparison. Dispensationalism has a long history tracing back more than a century, but the Ted Cruz and Trump manifestations also have more contemporary roots.

A video on Trump’s social media feed posted at 7:15 tonight recalled Senator John McCain’s 2007 call to “bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran” to the tune of the Beach Boys’ “Barbara Ann.” Trump’s version used McCain’s “bomb Iran” chorus but was longer and had visual imagery of planes dropping bombs. In Trump’s version, the soundtrack to the video used the melody of Barbara Ann to say things like: “went to a mosque, gonna throw some rocks, tell the ayatollah gonna put you in a box,” and “old Uncle Sam, getting pretty hot, gonna turn Iran into a parking lot.”

I’ve been reading about, & puzzling over why, Irish working hard to kill offshore wind projects. But Jesus, this LNG stuff is explosive. In literal ‘can blow up’ and other ways (think Ireland has no more forests because resources ‘exported’ to build colonial ships & wealth).
There’s like a one-in-1,000 chance perhaps of an accident happening, but when an accident does happen it would be catastrophic, so you do not want that facility in an area close to any kind of habitation. “I personally wouldn’t want to live next to any facility, whether it be an industrial site or whatever, or even within a two or three mile radius of it. “I wouldn’t be taking boat trips even out to our FSRU. Accidents can always happen.” Mr Griffiths made his comments in a frank interview in which he revealed that the reason major players in the global gas sector were looking at a small market such as Ireland was because they saw the country as a potential LNG distribution hub for Britain and mainland Europe.

Thanks for the link to a 'not so obscure' major event in Irish history, likely on par with the Norman invasion/invitation, that I did an MA thesis on ;) As for 'home rule', Canada went through and chose to remain a commonwealth constitutional monarchy.
2007 Irish-English bilingual critical edition In 2007, a “ major international flagship centenary commemoration to mark the 400th Anniversary of one of the most significant events and periods in Irish history” took place (Donegal County Council, 2007). The 400th anniversary marked the launch of Turas na dTaoiseach nUltach as Éirinn: from Ráth Maoláin to Rome (Turas) in Rome at “a history conference dedicated to the Ulster Earls in Baroque Europe” in 2007, with its publication also overseen in Rome, by Father Albert McDonnell, vice rector of the Pontifical Irish College (2007, p.9). Publication and book launch outside of Ireland is an intriguing commentary on the cultural understanding of Ó Cianáin’s text. Turas, the 2007 bilingual Classical Modern Irish and English critical edition is edited by Dr Nollaig Ó Muraíle, who also translated into English Ó Cianáin’s “enormously important eyewitness record” of the Ulster nobles’ interrupted journey from Ireland to Spain in search of refuge and aid to regain Gaelic control of Ireland under the protection of the Catholic Spanish crown (O’Neill, 2018, chap.Introduction) “In the name of God. Here are some of the adventures and proceedings of Ó Néill from the time that he left Ireland” (1.1). The chapter-number.paragraph-number format references the appropriate chapter and paragraph of Ó Cianáin’s narrative in the 2007 Irish-English edition of Turas. The Irish text, updated by Nollaig Ó Muraíle, will be used in the body of the thesis with his English translation in a footnote. Irish readers may be interested in details pertaining to Ó Muraíle’s efforts to keep the original Irish language intact but regularized according to Classical Modern Irish (see Ó Muraíle, 2007, pp.36–40). Bergin’s use of Ulster Earls highlights a problem discussed by Ó Muraíle in his introduction to Turas: the inaccuracy of referring to the Ulster nobles who departed as ‘the Earls’ when one (Cú Chonnacht Mag Uidhir) was not. Mícheál Mac Craith add… leading expert on Ó Cianáin, Ó Muraíle was a past pupil of Tomás Ó Fiaich whose “historical introduction and splendid commentary” for Pádraig de Barra’s 1972 Irish edition, entitled Imeacht na nIarlaí, is included in Ó Muraíle’s edition” (Mac Craith, 2007, p.14). Described as “a kind of half-way version between Ó Cianáin’s original language and contemporary Irish,” Imeacht na nIarlaí was based on Fr Paul Walsh’s 1916 edition, the first translation into English, entitled Flight of the Earls (ibid. 2007). Turas, the Ó Muraíle 2007 edition, incorporates these two earlier editions without adopting, according to Nollaig Ó Muraíle, the “obnoxious term” ‘flight’ (2007, p.43). Decolonizing an ‘obnoxious term’ Ó Cianáin left his manuscript untitled. Choice of title for the three critical editions mentioned speaks to the translators and editors understanding of the text and the departure of the Ulster nobles. The text is “mentioned in three lists of manuscripts bound in to UCD-OFM, MS A 34” and “in two manuscripts in St Isidore’s College, Rome” as “Turas na nIarladh as Éirinn (‘The journey [or pilgrimage] of the earls out of Ireland’)” (Ó Muraíle, 2007, p.19; 2013, p.47; Ó Macháin, 2011, p.198). Journey and pilgrimage do represent most of the events narrated in Turas. In publishing Imeacht na nIarlaí, Ó Fiaich “eschewed” the concept of ‘flight’, which echoed a “disparaging reaction of the crown authorities”, for an Irish term that connotes both ‘departure’ and ‘adventure’ to create a more neutral but accurate depiction of events (Mac Craith, 2007, p.14). The 1916 English edition by Fr. Walsh, Flight of the Earls, fits an Anglo-colonialist semiotic system of propaganda that presented Gaelic people as wild, geese, in flight. The idea that the departure of the Ulster nobles could be planned and tactical did not fit condescending Anglo perceptions (Crowley, 2005). See detailed background to the two editions that contribute to the 2007 edition (Ó Muraíle, 2007, pp.31–44). … Spanish archives indicate the departure of the Ulster nobles was premeditated (Morgan, 1988, p.31; Ó Fiaich, 2007, p.402). Events leading up to their departure are complex and their motivation is contested (McCavitt, 1994). The Nine Years War was a significant interruption of a radical colonization program to ‘reform’ Gaelic society to ‘adjust’ to English cultural norms that began in 1541 when Ireland was designated a kingdom (Morgan, 1988, pp.10–11). In 1603, when Ó Néill submitted to the English crown, “there was a dawning recognition that Gaelic language and culture and the Catholic religion were under threat from England, English, and Protestantism” (Crowley, 2005, p.35). By 1607, the rapid discrediting of Ó Néill and the Ulster nobles before they even land on the continent confirms that Anglo-Irish/English rule in Ireland considered the Ulster nobles a serious threat to their regime: the English government in Dublin were using terms such as ‘sudden departure’, ‘secretly departed’ … and finally, on 17/27 September – less than a fortnight after the departure – Sir Arthur Chichester to the Privy Council for the first time uses the phrase ‘the flight of the Earls.’ … a decade or two later commentators such as the Franciscan Donatus Mooney, or Donnchadh Ó Maonaigh – writing when all hope of the Earls returning had vanished … used the term ‘Flight’, but added the important qualification that it was a forced flight (Ó Muraíle, 2007, pp.42–43). Whether or not the departure was “a tactical retreat with the strong hope of a return in triumph, with Spanish and/or Papal help” (Ó Muraíle, 2007, p.42), the king of England’s response was also swift. Within months of the Ulster nobles’ departure, James 1 issued ‘A Proclamation Touching the Earls of Tyrone and Tyrconnell’ to declare their act treasonous and their lands to be confiscated for the crown’s Plantation of Ulster in 1609 (Carroll, 2017a, p.23). However, it would take until 1613, three years after Ó Cianáin’s deat… The use of the term ‘flight’ signals a persistent cultural rift, perceived or not, that places control of Gaelic narratives in the language, interests, and perceptions of Ireland’s colonizers. The 2007 edition’s title, Turas na dTaoiseach nUltach as Éirinn: from Ráth Maoláin to Rome, presents an overdue, nuanced impression of the departure and events in Ó Cianáin’s text. With a title that neither amplifies nor denies ambiguities in the cultural critical context for the text’s inception, Ó Muraíle’s editorial choice effectively ‘recovered and listened to the voice of colonial resistance in the already digested historical archives and records of the elite’ (Didur and Heffernan, 2003, p.3). The term turas (and taoiseach) reclaims dignity for the Ulster nobles and roots the meanings of their action in a Gaelic cultural, semiotic system. Narrative period and location Events recorded in Turas cover a period from September 1607 to November 1608 and begin with Ó Néill travelling through Ireland to set sail from Ráth Maoláin (Rathmullan). The first entry (6 September 1607) describes Ó Néill at Baile Shláine (Slane) with the lord Justice of Ireland, Sir Arthur Chichester. The next day, Ó Néill receives a letter: Cú Chonnacht Mág Uidhir and others have come to Cuan Súilighe Móire (Lough Swilly, near Rathmullan) with a French ship to take Ó Néill, the Iarla Thíre Conaill (earl of Tyrconnell), and their family and friends from Ireland (1.2). The ship lands in northwest France and from there the Ulster nobles are permitted to travel to the Spanish Netherlands (Louvain), where they remain for a few months. Then, a smaller group departs for Rome, passing through Switzerland into Italy. The story Ohler tells begins in the days of the Weimar Republic, when Germany’s pharmaceutical industry was thriving – the country was a leading exporter both of opiates, such as morphine, and of cocaine – and drugs were available on every street corner. It was during this period that Hitler’s inner circle established an image of him as an unassailable figure who was willing to work tirelessly on behalf of his country, and who would permit no toxins – not even coffee – to enter his body. “He is all genius and body,” reported one of his allies in 1930. “And he mortifies that body in a way that would shock people like us! He doesn’t drink, he practically only eats vegetables, and he doesn’t touch women.” No wonder that when the Nazis seized power in 1933, “seductive poisons” were immediately outlawed. In the years that followed, drug users would be deemed “criminally insane”; some would be killed by the state using a lethal injection; others would be sent to concentration camps. Drug use also began to be associated with Jews. The Nazi party’s office of racial purity claimed that the Jewish character was essentially drug-dependent. Both needed to be eradicated from Germany. Some drugs, however, had their uses, particularly in a society hell bent on keeping up with the energetic Hitler (“Germany awake!” the Nazis ordered, and the nation had no choice but to snap to attention). A substance that could “integrate shirkers, malingerers, defeatists and whiners” into the labour market might even be sanctioned. At a company called Temmler in Berlin, Dr Fritz Hauschild, its head chemist, inspired by the successful use of the American amphetamine Benzedrine at the 1936 Olympic Games, began trying to develop his own wonder drug – and a year later, he patented the first German methyl-amphetamine. Pervitin, as it was known, quickly became a sensation, used as a confidence booster and performance enhancer by everyone from secretaries to actors to train drivers (initially, it could be bought without prescription). It even made its way into confectionery. “Hildebrand chocolates are always a delight,” went the slogan. Women were recommended to eat two or three, after which they would be able to get through their housework in no time at all – with the added bonus that they would also lose weight, given the deleterious effect Pervitin had on the appetite. Ohler describes it as National Socialism in pill form.

This misleading, mendacious definition of “fraud” as “money for things we don’t like” didn’t originate with MAGA. In his 2018 book How Fascism Works, philosopher Jason Stanley noted that “publicizing false charges of corruption while engaging in corrupt practices is typical of fascist politics, and anticorruption campaigns are frequently at the heart of fascist political movements.” Stanley continues: Corruption, to the fascist politician, is really about the corruption of purity rather than of law. Officially, the fascist politician’s denunciations of corruption sound like a denunciation of political corruption. But such talk is intended to evoke corruption in the sense of the usurpation of traditional order. In other words, when Trump and Musk say that USAID is “corrupt” what they mean is that it is a violation of racial hierarchy to spend money to save the lives of millions of non-white poor people. When they say that Social Security is “wasteful,” what they mean is that it is wrong to spend money to protect the elderly poor. Stanley notes that false charges of corruption were at the core of Southern ideological attacks on Reconstruction. Former Confederates and white supremacists lied that the interracial Reconstruction state governments established after the Civil War were riddled with graft and theft, proving that Black people were unfit to hold office. Historian and civil rights leader W.E.B. Du Bois explained in his pioneering work Black Reconstruction that “the center of the corruption charge … was in fact that poor men were ruling and taxing rich men.” He added: The south, finally, with almost complete unity, named the negro as the main cause of southern corruption. They said, and reiterated this charge, until it became history: that the cause of dishonesty during reconstruction was the fact that 4,000,000 disfranchised black laborers, after 250 years of exploitation, had been given a legal right to have some voice in their own government, in the kinds of goods they would make and the sort of work they would do, and in the distribution of the wealth which they created.
