I made up words and kept singing how I loved you, and you had gone, while all the rest of the choir were singing Hallelujahs. I presume nobody heard me, because I sang so small, but it was a kind of a comfort to think I might put them out, singing of you. I a'nt there this afternoon, tho', because I am here, writing a little letter to my dear Sue, and I am very happy. I think of ten weeks - Dear One, and I think of love, and you, and my heart grows full and warm, and my breath stands still. The sun does'nt shine at all, but I can feel a sunshine stealing into my soul and making it all summer, and every thorn, a rose. And I pray that such summer's sun shine on my Absent One, and cause her bird to sing!

And so feeling his own testicles left behind, without manhood, staining the earth with fresh-spilled blood, She now felt driven to lightly take the drum with snow-pale han (That is to say, your drum, Kybele, You O Holy Mother, Your h instrument, yes.) And shaking the hollow bull's hides with her delicate fingers Began, trembling, to sing to her companions. "Come, Gallae! Go to the high woods of Kybele, go at once, wandering sheep of the Lady of Mt Dindymos ATTIS 63, written by Still Meeeeeee (right pages) Yes, it was a holy frenzy that carried me over those waters So bright and wild it seemed to split my body open, And the pines were dark and looming at first around Her place But I was ready, unswerving, every drop of me sang in chorus As I took the blade and joined this sisterhood. There's no denying, it was bloody work to leave a part of me behind, To splatter on the soil, but violets grew there with every drop, the screams were joyful birth. The rush of newness, yes, driven i was, my hands were pale and shaking till they clenched Her drum, discovering i was fit at last to play Her song To pound the tympanum, the hand-held drum, the heartbeat of wildness And sing, to those who went before, and carried me there:

THE POEMS Basho being lewd A pair of deer rubbing hair up against hair each other's hair so hard to please meotojika ya / ke ni ke ga soroute / ke mutsukashi Autumn, 1671. Basho uses the word ke ("hair") three times. ke mutsu-kashi is a pun on ki mutsukashi ("fastidious"). The poem, written when he was twenty-eight, can be read as an allusion to Bashö's love of men. The original has a syllable count of 6-8-7. The second of Basho's two poems in Kai Oi ("The Seashell Game").

The Girton Girls of yesteryear, with their bicycle stockings and book bags, had now taken the wheel. Fast and modern, motoring allowed us to clamber into our seats side by side and set off for a destination barely visible on the horizon. We had khaki car coats and emergency rations. It was true that our motor cars often broke down unexpectedly; we kept a packet of books on hand, so that when stalled on the roadside we could read Renée Vivien. In fact we had learned how to motor by reading the manuals. It was not unlike tribadism or clitorism, if you studied the diagrams closely you could generally manage the manoeuvres once en route.
