i'd go even further and say there is a reason even nixon kept this kind of stuff to himself. you would have to go back quite a bit to find a point at which is acceptable for a president to say anything like this *in public*, to say nothing of in the oval office.
I don’t want to be pollyannish about the past, but it was basically inconceivable twenty years ago that a president would say this publicly

NEW: @propublica.org investigated the Chicago apartment raid where kids were zip-tied and citizens detained for hours. They find:
- NONE of the arrested were criminally charged
- NO evidence the building was "filled with TdA terrorists."
- ZERO legitimate reason for DHS to rappel from a Blackhawk.

But it isn’t smart, because those are the tactics of an insurgent group or a criminal gang. It undermines their claim of being a legitimate law enforcement agency, and makes them look like a band of lawless goons… which they actually are.

The actions of DHS and ICE over the past few months clearly illustrate the difference between being clever and being smart. It’s clever of ICE to hide their faces, use inconspicuous vehicles, swap license plates, etc.
