Teaching medieval & ancient history at a SLAC in Michigan. Researches nostalgia. Lots of nerdy things. A greyhound named Malibu. Still misses old Twitter. he/him 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈
My (delightful) partner, assessing our visit to Segovia: "It's only a real castle if it's in Castile, otherwise it's just sparkling battlements."

I stood in front of this Monet at the DIA yesterday, & had a profound sense that my departed mother, who adored Impressionists, was standing beside me. I felt almost as if I could see her there & reach out to her. I had to move on before I completely broke down. Art has such power to move the soul.

Came up in my memories, don't have the citations unfortunately. Christ as geometer between the angels and the hellmouth.

My friend Norma died on AA77 at the Pentagon. Everyone thinks of the Towers in New York, but this is 9/11 to me.

Last weekend of summer. Thinking a lot about mom. She loved to hear about the first day of a new semester. This cosmic sky reminds me of the journey into the West, appropriate as I embark on my Tolkien first-year course for the first time since she passed.

Also I finally got my mold guys in to fix the other quarter of my basement we thought was fine three years ago. So much work boxing up several hundred books. Still a month before the flooring company can resurface.
Still have to revamp syllabi

I wasn't happy with any of the genealogies of the kings of Jerusalem and Cyprus that I saw online, so I wrote it out by hand for class.
I do things like this surprisingly often. Especially when there's a stack of papers to grade...

Put up the rest of my faux-stained-glass at my office at the college. I’ll get better pics on a sunnier day.

Got these stained-glass replica static clings, finally got them up in my home office. Really loving the vibe they give.

At the Renn Faire this weekend (yes, I enjoy tacky fake medieval, been going for a third of a century), had a lovely chat with an elderly artist couple after correctly identifying a painting of Ecthelion dueling Gothmog at the Fall of Gondolin. Lovely people, ended up with this portrait of Turgon
