Immigrants being deported to Guatemala. Cost per hour to operarate a c17 exceeds $20,000 per hour. Couldnt they fly commercial? Lets say a 4 hour flight down and 4 back. Thats $160,000. Just saying...

About the lower half of the hills are covered in what are labeled shoreline deposits, and Lake Alamosa's paleo-shoreline is marked with a dash line halfway up the hills. The paleo-shoreline's elevation is marked as 7660 feet (2335 meters). Marchette et al. also mark the direction of sediment transport in the old lake system as an arrow pointing from ~north (left side of the image) to ~south (the right side of this image). Three sample locations are also labeled in the image, two soil pits and one Helium 3 sample site (for surface exposure dating). Combined geologic and paleo-geographic map for the Lake Alamosa region around 3 to 3.5 million years ago as reconstructed by Machette et al. 2013. The lake and surrounding valley are a half graben, a valley that forms in the down thrown block of crust that forms as a normal fault pulls the region apart--the normal fault is the red line along the right (east) of the valley edge. The northern half of the valley is filled by Lake Alamosa (shown in shades of blue that become darker with increasing paleo-depth). The southern half is filled by a volcanic field (the Taos Plateau Volcanic Field, shown as small volcano icons scattered around that half of the map) which includes Oligocene (~26 million year old rocks) volcanic rocks in dark red that make up the San Luis Hills. These hills formed a kind of natural dam that prevented the lake from being drained by the paleo-Rio Grande river. Orange blobs scattered in the southern half of the valley are the locations of 5-6 million year old (Late Miocene volcanic rocks while the pink material filling most of the valley is Pliocene (~5-3 million year old rocks for this image) basaltic volcanic rock. A much smaller lake, Lake Sunshine, sits between Lake Alamosa and the headwaters of the early Rio Grande. Topographic map from Machette et al. 2013 showing the location of Lake Alamosa today. The old, pre-430 thousand years ago lakeshore is approximately outlined by a dash line filling most of the San Luis Valley of Colorado/New Mexico. The Colorado-New Mexico state border sits just above the lower edge of the map. A small map inset in the upper left shows the position of topographic map relative to the rest of the state of Colorado--it shows that the topo map covers the southern 1/3 of the state from north to south and middle 1/5 of the state from east to west. The Rio Grande cuts through the southern half of the old lake, and through the middle of the San Luis Hills that once kept the lake separate from the Rio Grande's drainage. The town of Alamosa, from which the paleo-lake gets its name sits along the Rio Grande somewhat south of the middle of the paleo-lake.
