Been saying this, less eloquently, for years. I actually like dogs, and was brought up with them in my family life, but the current dogs/cats-as-surrogate-humans craze just baffles and saddens me.

When I read it, years ago, I thought it would make a great TV series if some modern birders repeated the trip and highlighted what has changed. It was coming up to the 50th anniversary of the publication date at the time. We've just passed the 70th now.
