Medical fun fact:
The reason you need to get a new flu vaccine every year and they keep making new Covid boosters isn't because the vax's wear off that fast.

Viruses that are very contagious mutate quickly, and the old vax's don't work on the newer versions of the viruses, so a new vax is needed.

Medical "fun" fact of the day:
BMI (body mass index) is not used as a direct test or diagnosis for health conditions.
If a patient has a high BMI (>25), that just tells us to get more measurements like body roundness/body fat, and check labs like metabolic and lipid panels.

Medical "fun" fact of the day:
Annual physicals/check-ups are very important for adults. We focus on how your health is now, how to improve it, and doing screening labs or tests to catch bad things early.

Under the ACA, all insurance plans must cover an annual physical that's free for the patient.

Medical "fun" fact for today:
Almost all EMRs (electronic medical records) have a function to enter a patient's preferred name AND pronouns.

Providers should make sure a patient's medical record shows their correct gender identity, and patients can ask to have it corrected if it's wrong.

After extensive review, France has established very positive gender affirming care guidelines, and they’ve rejected the highly politicized Cass Report as simply false.

New French guidelines show doctors overwhelmingly support gender-affirming care - LGBTQ Nation
The medical guidelines contradict numerous conclusions from the UK's infamous Cass Review.

Medical "fun" fact of the day:
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a very common medical condition in American adults.

There are many meds that can be used to treat hypertension, but by far the most effective treatment (2- 5x more effective than meds) is lifestyle changes like diet and exercise.

Medical "fun" fact of the day:
Physicians in America will have one of three degrees depending on what kind of medical school they went to:
MD: allopathic (standard) medical school in America or the Caribbean

Medical "fun" fact of the day:
A primary care physician will typically be board certified in Family, Internal, or Pediatric Medicine.

Different medical board certs have different training requirements, but all of them will be well-trained in primary care which also includes specialty coordination.

Medical "fun" fact of the day:
Patients can request to see new providers or to get second opinions for any reason. So don't be shy about asking!

Medical providers should be happy to help facilitate this, and many medical insurance plans will cover it (check with your insurance specifically tho)
