I'd just tell them it depends on who the republican candidate is. Force them to argue that party loyalty is more important than candidate quality.

The only chance that California elects a republican governor at the moment is if the Dems intentionally push a terrible candidate. They will try, but i think the voters will push through DNC resistance and elect someone decent in the primaries.

I think most people that find him unsettling see him as a hollow suit. His positions and behavior change to suit whomever he is talking to at the moment. In many ways the same issue J.D. Vance has. They are both career politicians that don't seem to care about anything but power.

Liberals are at best moderates, in most western nations on the right. Pretending they are leftists is how we've had 60+ years of conservative presidents, and how we slid do far to the right we got fascism.

The odds of the DNC letting a decent candidate win their primary is slim to none. We'll get a conservative pretending to be progressive like Newsome, he'll alienate the left, not get any traction on the right, and lose to whatever swamp monster wins the gop primary.

Someone that they believe will actually start to fix the problems that are destroying their lives. It doesn't take much, just not a charisma vacuum promising them that nothing will get better and that a lesser evil is the best they can hope for. Almost anybody in the country would have done better.
