Still 100% get the emotions that would come with that, but I figured I would share my limited knowledge on the subject. One of my friends qualifies for Austrian citizenship and feels similarly.

Writing this as an American living in Germany currently- I completely understand why you feel this way. Something to consider may be to do the steps necessary for citizenship, and then having the freedom to live wherever in the EU.
