They can hit fastballs when they know they are coming. Hell, I myself have hit them off of a pitching machine. But the barrel rate on a 100mph sinker is going to be much lower than on a 93 mph pitch. Yes, the approach has shifted, but so has the pitching.

I think the average FB in the 1990s was 88-89 and there were probably fewer than 100 pitches of 100mph or more thrown in the entire decade.
