On April 17, 1955 Roberto Clemente made his Major League debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates. For all but the first seven weeks of his major league career, Clemente wore jersey number 21, chosen because his full name, Roberto Clemente Walker, had that many letters. His initial jersey number was 13.
