Is there a scenario where you would consider masking a reasonable ask? Like say, essential spaces such as public transportation, grocery stores, public buildings such as courthouses and the DMV?

I think the framing of “universal public masking” used by so many people who no longer mask when talking about it is on purpose, creating a false “all or nothing” choice in order to justify “nothing.” It’s a cover because they won’t cede any inconvenience, even essential spaces.

I wonder if you’d consider it a reasonable ask for masking in essential indoor public spaces such as healthcare settings, public transportation, etc?

Absolutely this. Bars and restaurants may be one thing, but in essential spaces like public transportation, grocery stores, healthcare settings, etc, it is reasonable and good to prioritize care for the most vulnerable over one’s own risk profile.

Don’t want to ascribe strategy to something that can be explained by laziness, but this also has the larger effect of making it riskier to be “law abiding”, thus incentivizing “law breaking” - which could then be used to justify escalation.

The thing is, it would never be consistently applied. They would just use it as a weapon to terrorize who they wanted, when they wanted. Logic fails because they aren’t interested in coherence, it’s just a pretense for the boot.

I totally agree with the general sentiment, but I don’t think it’s possible to out-Trump Trump by recycling his old memes. Are voters who rejected “Stop the Steal” and “rigged elections” in 2020 going to be persuaded by it now?
