sick of the antipoptimism. time to fight it with music theory.
Before You Dismiss Pop Music, Give It An "Academic Listen"
Someone who actually understands music theory helps me take down antipoptimists in a way I never could on my own: by deconstructing actual pop music by Taylor Swift and Charli XCX.

I've started interviewing some very special people (and condiments) about their musical nostalgia and making mixtapes for them based on their responses.

Virtually every single record that receives any kind of review at all receives a positive one. So who is an album score even helping?

In an age of playlists and digital music sharing, can you still make a mixtape than means something to the recipient?

New Music DNA - Pt. 1: Can I Turn Nostalgia Into Bespoke Mixtapes?
Can new music scratch the Gen X itch? I turned Kevin Alexander’s love of Fugazi, New Order & Jawbreaker into a playlist of brand new music just for him (but you can listen, too)

all music critics are a bunch of frauds -- nobody can pick the "best" when we don't listen to everything. but I hope you choose me, the best fraud of them all, to help you find new music, instead of relying on algorithms to feed you AI slop.

All this bc the left couldn’t get behind a black woman.

Your hatred will make everyone suffer.

It’s not their fault that black women are educated and capable and you’re jealous.

Opening a can of worms with this one... but the real headline here is that nothing is as black and white as it seems, and this is me doing a lot of handwringing over it. Bonus: best discussion my articles have ever generated in the comments!

Hey "Gabbie" is me! Thanks, that's for sure what I was trying to get at. We cling to memories. It's a Proustian response.
So this Substack post, by "Gabbie," is interesting. To me, it's a combo reason, touching on nostalgia. You think back to when you were in high school, and your #1 interest was your current crush, and it was the 80s, well, then, you'll fondly recall classic rock.

Why You Think New Music Sucks
Sure, it could be the music itself...but could it also be nostalgia, or choice overload, or uncertainty about where to find good new music?

TikTok was incredibly enjoyable, annoying, frustrating, comforting, and stressful.

Creators know commenters were equal parts exhausting and exhilarating.

Be kind to people who miss it. Think of it as a summer camp you never went to and never really got.

The bigger my platform gets (elsewhere obviously) the more people think they found an ally in me for opinions like “new music is all derivative." Sorry, I'm not on your side. I love new music, and I definitely think the kids are alright. I can live with the hypocrisy of gatekeeping the gatekeepers.
