I don't remember why I picked it up but I thoroughly enjoyed it and subsequently read her other books. They were enjoyable but not quite as fun.
You should give Scarlett Thomas a try, if you're looking for a new author that has a somewhat similar feel.

I finished reading this while on a plane and just ugly cried. It is such beautiful writing.
