Thank you to all sports parents who show up. In the rain. When it’s cold. Regardless of their athlete’s playing time. Win or lose. Home or away.
Unconditional love looks a lot like that.

So grateful for an evening of catch-up and a morning of youth-sports-story swapping. These 2 had an enormous impact on the research & lived experience for the book & I’m so glad to have had time w/ stillwater rotary to share the start of what we’re all sure will be a WORLD TOUR of #FortheTeam.😂

Spontaneous conga lines during a pick-up soccer night are sorta awesome. Offering space for freedom of thought and freedom of movement is a gift we should give our kids as often as possible.

The timing of my book being published means the dismissal of my perspective could be swift and without discussion. I pray daily that discourse is still possible.

In honor of tomorrow’s launch of For the Team, I’ve created a set of playing cards. Some cards have questions, some have photos and some reference specific experiences, not all of which could be included in the book. Hubby and I will draw at random to discuss 11-1.

45 years… as a player, as a coach, as a parent, and as the spouse of a coach. That’s a long sports story.
Competition and a way to work through ugly, hard emotions drew me in initially.
Connection and a way to provide positive expression and relationship has kept me there.
What’s your sports story?

I whisper in a yelling world.

In order for people to hear, “You are loved. You matter. You are worthy. You’re enough.” I need to be in the same room with them.

May I be near someone who needs to hear this today. ❤️

There’s open ⚽️ today‼️
For over a decade, I’ve found ways to get kids into gyms during winter to play. Rooted in the purity of recess, & offered free for those who can’t pay, it fills me completely to see high schoolers running games & energetic children running & laughing.
Prioritize play!

Yes! Please choose sampling over specialization. The expanse of life experiences demands it.

Parents, your children may very well become next-level athletes, but focusing too much energy there means you miss everything happening on this level.

Be supportive. Be curious. And be present at each level you get to journey with them.

Privatization of youth sports.

Individualization of team member choices.

Teams, communities, & the larger whole matters less than our personal desires.

Choosing community above self strengthens the community & the community strengthens its members.

Choosing self above community isolates.

The youth sports system requires systemic change. Our family’s system needed change too.
My personal overhaul was so I could show up for our sporting kids the way they deserved.
I share my work, discoveries and victories to change our family’s system. Control the controllable!

I spent 12 years untangling myself from the sports story that was partly written by others, written with words I thought I should use, and then ultimately landed in my soon-to-be-released book For the Team. I hope it encourages others to look intently at their own stories too.

For hockey, lacrosse & football parents too. Any place their equipment must go…give them the tools and instruction to carry it themselves. And especially for hockey folks…teach kids to tie their own skates as early as you can.
Make your kid carry their own bag and water. If they have both a backpack and a rolling catcher's bag, have them carry and drag both.
It's their game. Let them own it.

They’re setting up camp on the lake. Ice. Fishing. Sub-zero temps. The transformation from summer to winter always blows my mind. (I took this pic 1 mile in to my 2.5-mile walk on water😊)
