A mixed fruit & nut silvopasture experiment, cooperatively farming at Preservation Orchard based in Hadley & Sunderland MA. Raising grass fed lamb, yarn, dye plants, sheep’s wool sponges, pasture raised chicken & eggs.
About halfway through the dye lot for Wayland Farm Fiber Day, coming up on March 9, all botanical dyed 🌞 in-between farm chores, like doling out CDT vaccine boosters for all bred ewes. This gives their lambs some passive immunity to tetanus, which is v present in our New England soils

Knitting up my first fair isle, the Mt. Warner Cowl by Gudrun Johnston, all in our own wool & all dyed yarn is from farm grown & processed botanicals.

The farm is on the north side of Mt. Warner, a hill that means a great deal to everyone who has met it.

It’s quiet & warm in the sun this morning at the farm. It’s not often that chores are done in such silence. Yesterday the guardian dogs were constantly in work-mode, running after the snow mobilers who run down and back along the mile-long frozen lake at the base of the orchard. It’s nice rn

Pregnancy scans for the yearling breeding group today- they’re all settled & all but one appear to be carrying at least twins.

Lambing is set to start around March 15. It always feels good to have the vet come by and just give everyone a glance-at before we get into the thick of late gestation

The ewes have well crested the gestation half way point, with the cold weather, good hay & lots of hormones, they’ve been hilariously zesty in the dusky sunsets of the orchard. Running the length of their winter yard, kicking up their heels

Athena & the hens moved into the winter yard ahead of last weeks snow storm & cold. Cash & Athena now share fence line- the morning meetings are really sweet w an even mix of attention & crushing on the other
