In the never ending search for confirming family stories, today, I finally found proof that my gg grandfather was indeed a legitimate resident in Moscow during the time when legitimate Jewish settlement in the city was highly restricted. That proof? The birth of his first son that no one knew about!

Fun in linguistics and archives. Today, I stumbled across a temettuat defter for a Balkan Jewish community, with surnames. The Ottoman official carefully recorded how he heard the name: "Yakof oğlu Davi Alevy". Those who know Sephardic linguistics will recognize the silent ה!
