Painted bike lanes only work for the most confident and able-bodied cyclists, and only sometimes. Worse, they lull city planners into a false sense of "completion", making it hard to advocate for better. Advocating for painted lines ultimately makes it harder to get more people on bikes.

Ideally we'd put a curb-separated bike path on both sides. In places we can't, we should still put it on one side, and make a compromise: if your destination is on the wrong side, it's ok to bike carefully on the sidewalk.
