You could read "Skyfaring" by Mark Vanhoenacker. He used to write the "Ask a Pilot" column for Slate, and it really helped me relax about flying by learning what all the noises and bumps were about.

I did this in 2008 right around the bottom of the market. On one hand, if I had let it be, it would have recovered in a couple years and been up 100% by now. On the other hand, I used the money to fund a move to NYC which changed the direction of my life for the better. No right answer IMHO.
