He said the same at a meeting I attended where he spoke in October. He also said (paraphrasing) that he’s basically an old school liberal Republican, to go with his Friedmanian economics ideology. Not a progressive thinker in any way, he’d likely be okay being described as a Rockefeller Republican.

I think the same could reasonably be said today about masked federal agents killing civilians and the so called Liberal media would react similarly!
