Really amazing to see #AI #ethics as the topic of Harvard Medical School’s oldest endowed lecture (est. 1917 by George Washington Gay, class of 1868). Effy Vayena’s talk was a tour de force on the implications of AI for bioethics.

My career has focused on patient safety & quality. Since I’ve now been at Google for a while, I often get asked what #AI means for quality & safety since we’re in the generative AI era. I wrote down some thoughts on the space, out now in BMJ Quality & Safety: qualitysafety.bmj.com/content/33/1....
Generative artificial intelligence, patient safety and healthcare quality: a review
The capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) have accelerated over the past year, and they are beginning to impact healthcare in a significant way. Could this new technology help address issues th...

All #AI is not the same. Grateful to get to share thoughts on a framework of AI 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 for healthcare in JAMA today:
AI 1.0 = symbolic AI and probabilistic models
AI 2.0 = the era of deep learning
AI 3.0 = foundation models and generative AI

These are fairly crummy photos, but they are just from a regular zoom lens plus a teleconverter. It’s shocking to me that you can see Jupiter that way. I don’t think I’m hallucinating the cloud bands in one, and in the other you can see three of Jupiter’s moons in orbit. #astrophotography

It's worth your time to watch this ~6 min video, if you're at all interested in what's next for #AI. youtu.be/UIZAiXYceBI

It can be hard to get a feel for WHY something is a technological step change ... but this demo of Google’s next foundation model gives a good sense. It's pretty mind-blowing.
