"Native New Yorker, adoptive Chicagoan, 24-year veteran of being a stranger in a strange land." Drosophila (fly) person. Childless cat man. Cinema buff. "Fascinated by everything except how to dress," as Matt Groening would put it.
This is in the middle of Dean Baquet’s tenure as Executive Editor, and a year after James Bennet took over as Op-Ed Page Editor.

The final Public Editor, Elizabeth Spayd, had a tumultuous single year in the job before it was eliminated. The Atlantic, HuffPost & CJR all reported on it at the time.

Interesting he chose 2028 & 2030 for his reference years… it’s as if Massie is warning certain _senators_ who will come up for reelection in either of those years, and for anyone considering a run for president.

Clever. Perhaps too clever by half.

I read Tilghman’s R-loop globin gene intron-mapping papers as they were being published from Phil Leder’s lab. Heady stuff, during my sophomore year, right alongside the adenovirus major-late promoter papers by Tom Broker & Louise Chow.

Her eyes seemed to emit lethal laser beams.

“How long must a black man wait?” was her very angry response.

I was taken aback, and the topic dropped.

If I was quicker I’d have pointed out that “this is the Supreme Court seat vacated by _Thurgood Marshall._”

*sigh* We can’t all be Brandeises.

I was postdoc’ing with Tony at the time. He had an African-American administrative assistant working at a desk in the lab when the Thomas hearings were underway.

When I noted that he was only 50ish & had served on a Federal bench only a year or two, and was too inexperienced, she glared at me. 1/n

What strikes me as greatly elevating the shit-show potential is the possibility of arbitrarily waiving the Secret-or-higher security clearance requirement, a la Jared during the first term.

Or can they play the “acting” or “interim” cards as they’re doing with USAtty appointments at DOJ?

There ARE no original recordings of, for example, Johann Sebastian Bach performing the _Goldberg Variations_. We only get to debate piano recordings (e.g., Glenn Gould) versus “authentic performance/original instruments” recordings (e.g., Trevor Pinnock).

Well, MY six-term Freedom Caucus congressman was definitely NOT doing “important work in his district.” He hasn’t been at his #Birmingham #Alabama office in months, and apparently he sent his staff home for the duration.

How do I know? Because I’ve intermittently attended weekly rallies there!

Absolutely. Implied by “skilled.”

The “right tools” in his box included language. He made his point very persuasively, which is why the entire pool was excused.

Hon… remind us who fired the BLS director & is overseeing the evisceration of the federal government?

Another data point behind why Thomas Carlyle coined the term “dismal science” for economics nearly two centuries ago.

My father, a skilled tool & die maker, once stated that there were “no such things as accidents” in an industrial setting. Every injury had a chain of causation that could be determined by thorough investigation.

He was excused from jury duty — as was that entire pool of prospective jurors.

Trump IS on the ballot — in absentia, by virtue of his disastrous policies which Tuberville has supported.

Every Democrat running in every race should be running against Trumpism and treat every Republican as a Trump fellow traveler — especially the congressmen running for reelection.

Priceless — two non-scientists mischaracterizing how science is conducted before an anti-science audience.

OK, yes… the California license plate with the letters “U” and “S” vertically aligned on the left side & the plate number “S 1” in the center. Rainfall at night, so the mystery is “drunk driving,” “suicide” or “brake sabotage.”

The very last scene is Lyman giving a thoughtful press conference.

I read the book once, 40 years ago. The 1964 film adaptation I’ve seen more times than I can count — including 2x in the last month. The film omits the Iran partition subplot altogether. It also omits the death of the treasonous California senator, whose car crashes under mysterious circumstances.

Ask Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA). I’m pretty sure she can explain it to us.

FOURTEEN institute and center directorships are to be filled and not one has a proper search committee or reasonable submission deadline relative to posting date. That’s half of the NIH org chart!

Are the positions subject to Senate confirmation, or do Jay & Bobby get the final say?

Fleetwood Mac did _Black Magic Woman_???

The fact that I only know the Santana version is a QED to the proposition that covers _can_ surpass the original.
