I like a joke as much as the next man, but I dont think anyone - left or right - should discount the serious work he did early in his career with Anthony Hopkins.

Revolution - the one with Pacino and Donald Sutherland. Yeah, it ain't exactly a success. But there's a moment at the end which matches your criteria and it's haunting.
