For the first time since July 5, 2012, Atlanta International Airport has recorded a temperature of at least 100°F during the month of July. It's actually surprisingly hard for Atlanta to observe triple-digit heat because of its relatively high elevation of over 1,000 feet ASL.

Another extreme rainfall and flooding event took place yesterday. Check out this map of central North Carolina showing 1-day rainfall totals with white pixels exceeding a 1,000-year average recurrence interval. A total of 9 pixels located east of Burlington exceeded this exceptional return period!

Here's a map I created that shows 3-day precipitation totals (spanning 1200 UTC on July 4th through 1200 UTC on July 6th) across the Texas Hill Country, with white pixels indicating totals that exceeded their 100-year average recurrence interval according to NOAA Atlas 14.

Nothing else on the KFFC radar except this urban-generated shower drifting southward. The Atlanta urban heat island at work, y’all.

Heads up Atlanta and Athens area friends: Some severe storms are heading your way from the northwest! These northwest flow severe storms are capable of producing strong winds and large hail. The large hail is probably the biggest hazard.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Braves game is delayed soon.

The Weather Channel is firing some shots over on Threads, I noticed.

What do we think, meteorological community? Is #StormEowyn a traditional Norwegian cyclone as advertised by NOAA (left) or a Shapiro-Keyser cyclone as shown by the UK Met Office (right)? I lean towards the latter.

This morning, I put together this Python-generated map of total snowfall accumulations for the recent winter storm, using data from NOHRSC's National Gridded Snowfall Analysis. This is a winter storm that we will not soon forget!

Final forecast for the impending winter storm tomorrow. These snowfall amounts are simply jaw-dropping for the Mobile area.

Let’s make history and break some records, y’all!

I couldn’t make it to the @ametsoc.bsky.social Annual Meeting this year due to teaching responsibilities, but I enjoyed listening to @drshepherd2013.bsky.social’s talk in the Presidential Forum via livestream. His main point was the enhanced vulnerability of the Gulf Coast region to climate change.

Since I had some free time, I decided to plot the annual precipitation totals, departure from average precipitation, and percent of average precipitation across the Southeast region for 2024. Some interesting patterns! What do you see?

Nice view of Stone Mountain on my approach into Atlanta this morning!

Classic radar signature of lake-effect snow across all five of the Great Lakes this evening. Fascinating meteorology at work!
