2026 marks the 40th anniversary of 1986. All year!

To mark this occasion, I am watching the 7 highest-grossing films of 1986 (in North America). I’m hoping glean something about the culture of that year. What was popular? Do they hold up?

Here are the top films of 1986:

James Cameron: Remember Spider??

Anyone else: The white kid with dreads from the second Avatar?

JC: Yeah! Wasn’t he awesome??

AE: Actually he was kind of—

JC: Exactly! Now he’s the most important character in the third film.

AE: Really? Maybe he should—

JC: ..have WAY more screen time? Agreed!

The newly-announced February Criterion titles are so exciting!

I don’t just want to buy Network, but I also want to buy Fail Safe to fill out my Lumet collection.

I don’t just want to buy Man Who Wasn’t There, but I also want to buy Miller’s Crossing to fill out my Coen collection.

Plus Playtime!

I’m happier than I should be to have this complete set.

But I love every time Wes Anderson makes his film, and these are beautiful sets from Criterion.

My top 8 Robert Redford vehicles:

-The Sting
-All the President’s Men
-Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
-Sneakers
-Three Days of the Condor
-The Candidate
-The Natural
-The Chase

I have not seen Jeremiah Johnson, The Old Man and the Gun, or The Hot Rock (to name a few that could make the list)

RIP Robert Redford

I recently rewatched Ordinary People, which gets a lot of flack for beating Raging Bull at the Oscars but is fantastic!

And I recently rewatched Sneakers, which is an underrated 90s thriller gem.

And The Sting is one of my all-time favourite films.

The guy was a total star.

Well, Rogue Nation is still my favourite Mission: Impossible film.

HOT TAKE: Each of McQuarrie’s M:I films is a bit worse than the last. I think he needs to move on.

Man, I can’t wait to see Olga Kurylenko reprise her role as Taskmaster in Thunderbolts!

She really got the short shrift in Black Widow, so it’s so exciting that she has a chance to shine here.

Yep, it’s going to be great seeing her for the whole film as one of the team!

Palme d’Or and now this. The film of 2024 in many ways.

Adrien Brody winning makes me understand why they are not having last year’s Best Actress present Best Actor.

They protected Emma Stone from Halle Berry’s fate, and I respect that.

8 of the 10 Best Picture nominees have won an Oscar.

5 of the 8 have won two Oscars.

No film is running away with it this year. They’re spreading the love.
