Regardless, I’d suggest that anyone advising junior colleagues to withhold publications is overthinking things. The problem is there are bugger all jobs, but good people doing good things will always get any that materialise. 3/3

Will panels also find ways to expose exploitative employers via the PCE section? Not impossible: that would be in line with the principle of that section. (Although exploitation is often desperation in disguise in current conditions). 2/3

There have certainly been many senior people involved in REF planning banging the portability drum for years, and I’m not sure the battle is absolutely over (given how fluid things are rn). 1/2

University departments are creative places: if you employ good people, they’ll create new areas of learning, new modules, new teaching methods. As we all fall into line with this efficiency drive, I’m struggling to see how that will happen in the future. Feels like a big loss.
