I blame university debate societies for this

I think it’s a subset of how no one is able or willing to argue in favour of in ideology and admit to holding specific beliefs. “This healthcare reform is actually supported by this New Testament passage” is no different from left wingers who argue that MLK would’ve loved firebombing Walmarts

This Prestigious University Is Evil But Also It’s Really Important That You Know I Studied Here is basically everything Rebecca Kuang has published

My Rich College Friends Are Pretentious And Annoying But Turns Out They Also Do Murders

But it is advanced as an argument already. Politicians at all levels of government use “it will jeopardize the safety of local communities” to argue against highways, drug treatment centres, social housing, and unlike all those cases there’s ample evidence that it’s true for resource development

She’s got the most money and endorsements, talks a lot about building a big tent, got the best result out of any NDP candidate this year. Also there‘s a strong feeling that the party needs a leader from the West and she’s a very overtly western candidate with strong link to provincial NDP parties

She‘s the only sitting MP running and the closest to the establishment candidate. She’s most high profile candidate, and as the party’s foreign affairs spokesperson in Parliament she’s become on of the most high-profile pro-Palestine MPs (and IMV has been very influential in the House on that issue)

Again - politically suicidal and factually correct

It is very well documented that the camps for men working on oil fields / mines / forestry are hot zones for physical and sexual violence against women and girls, both in canada and across the world, but it’s basically taboo to acknowledge that in Canadian public life

The grim thing is that Lewis is entirely correct here and he’s the only Canadian politician I’ve ever seen publicly acknowledge this very well-documented phenomenon
November 29, 2025 at 5:03 PM
I was always sceptical of Lewis’s strategy of “do a Zohran Mamdani impression but with 50% of the charisma“ and I guess it’s nice to see I wasn't the only one not sold on that

I’ll be honest I’ve never seen the Wizard of Oz, I’ve only read the book (when I was ten). I adored it, I still think the reveal of who the Wizard is one of the all time great twists in pop culture
November 29, 2025 at 3:54 AM
Wicked potentially becoming the main point of reference for the Wizard of Oz is bleak because unlike Wicked the Wizard of Oz is actually a really good and well written story from beginning to end

I mean based on her many many pronouncements on Ukraine I think it’s just that Loreto doesn’t think less powerful countries should ever try and put up a fight

She was, pretty explicitly, trying to remake an (imaginary) Victorian era social cohesion

I’m reminded of how the British tabloids regularly ran insulting quotes from Meghan Markle’s dad and half-siblings - people who she had very little relationship with - purely for their willingness to publicly insult and humiliate her
