Denmark’s approach to migration has been beholden to far-right parties for decades.

This is the country that confiscated Syrian refugees’ jewellery when they arrived in Denmark - just as they did to Jews fleeing Nazi Germany.

This is the model wanted by the UK Labour Party.

Absolutely jaw-dropping figures of UK Terrorism-related arrests.

Scholars have been warning for years that counterterrorism law is dangerous, racist, poorly conceived, largely unnecessary, and ripe for abuse.

Here is the result - its systematic use against protestors campaigning against genocide.

England. It's England.

The entire discussion around 'grooming gangs' is nothing but a far-right dog whistle for implementing fascist policies.

No concern though for the thousands upon thousands of civilians murdered by Israel in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iran.

Fantastic to be back at the beautiful European University Institute for the EUI Max Weber Programme conference:

🌍 'Knowledge and Power: Truth, Trust, Legitimacy and Resistance.'

Great to catch up with the Max Weber network, and share my research on colonialism, race and counterterror proscription.

Sharing this insightful commentary by Dr @saeedbg.bsky.social on international law and Israel's attack on Iran.

Yet, the West only talk of protecting and enabling Israel against the violence it is creating.

“There is a genocide taking place in Gaza, there are Palestinians being forcibly removed from Palestine or pushed into concentrated camps as an attempt to suffocate Gaza, and I think now what has come from that is a much clearer global awareness that we have to do something.”

“Israel kills a child in Gaza every 45 minutes.

That is an average of 30 children killed every day over the past 535 days.

Since 7th October 2023, Israel has killed at least 17,400 children (…) Many more remain buried under the rubble, most presumed dead."

“We need to understand the way in which international law intentionally embeds racism, and how this ensures its unequal application worldwide”

Great to be listening to Dr Robert Knox at Edinburgh University Law School, organised by @norajaber.bsky.social.

#stormeowyn update from Edinburgh:

5 out of 6 garden chairs down; bin still clinging on; one football shirt that was left on the washing line, lost.

It is, indeed, very blowy.

"This is the destruction of the Syrian military, navy, air force, to degrade it and leave it defenceless. This is an illegal act and an illegal invasion."

Under the Rome Statute, arms sales where the state has knowledge that the arms would be used to commit an international crime is prohibited.

The selling of arms to such a country 'could also render the state responsible under customary international law'

Starmer must stop all arms sales to Israel.

"there are reasonable grounds to believe that both individuals intentionally and knowingly deprived the civilian population in Gaza of objects indispensable to their survival, including food, water, and medicine and medical supplies, as well as fuel and electricity"

Great to be discussant for the screening of ‘Due Regard’ at Edinburgh University this evening.

The film explores the impact of counter-terrorism and Prevent on families.

Congrats to Shahnaz Akhter for her brilliant work, and thanks to İdil Akıncı Perez for arranging!

'That Starmer is unwilling to extend even a fraction of the condemnation shown to Vukova in 2014, to Gaza in 2024... is representative of the moral descent of the Labour Party into genocide complicity.'

Good to speak further with @scotnational.bsky.social

Starmer’s position on Gaza is politically untenable following a UN special committee report detailing practices by Israel consistent with genocide.

Labour are engaging in an incredibly dangerous approach in not only denying genocide but attempting to “redefine the nature of what genocide is”.
November 16, 2024 at 3:07 PM
Keir Starmer and David Lammy are engaging in genocide denialism by refusing to recognise the genocide in Gaza, and genocide revisionism by attempting to undermine its legal definition.

Great to talk with Steph Brawn and be featured on the front page of @scotnational.bsky.social to discuss this.

Beautiful views this morning out over Edinburgh to the Firth of Forth, for my ‘Race, Power and Social Policy’ class.

Spending the day with students discussing the UK’s Prevent counterterrorism programme and its Islamophobia and racialisation of Muslims.
