Good point about Engineer. Suppose it could have been altered, but that's even more of a stretch to believe. Unless you had a Kryptonian on the payroll - which is possible.

And it's not that big of a shift for Supes himself. Just kind of introduces some internal conflict to the character that isn't only driven by the bad guys.

That's what I thought at first, but then having different characters repeat "it's true" to doubters on screen makes it impossible for screenwriters to go back on it. I'm not saying it makes any real-world sense, only in the confines of narrative dissonance that would happen if it's not true.

They made a point of having three different parties separately confirm it's true - Luthor, US government, and Justice Gang. That's a pretty big rug to pull out from under you in a sequel.
