Last week, Orlando voters ousted their last Republican city commissioner. An incumbent since 2012, Jim Gray was trounced by former State House member Tom Keen

I dive into the details of the race in my latest article

In Miami, Democrat Eileen Higgins easily advanced to a December runoff with Republican Emilio Gonzalez

Thanks to incredibly strong Democratic turnout, fellow Dem Ken Russell almost edged into second!

This also marks the end for several longtime politicos. Carollo, Suarez, Portilla. The titans fell

Turnout in Miami as of 1pm. Democrats have done a very good job getting their side out.

In 2024, democrats had a 6% lead in vote cast. Right now that lead is almost 13%!

Today Miami has a dynamic 6 way race for mayor. Actually it’s 12 but we have 6 candidates who all have a shot at making the runoff

I delve deep into the race dynamics here mcimaps.substack.com/p/issue-259-...

Happy Halloween! 🎃

I present. The partisan breakdown of the over 1,200 elected county CORONERS in America 💀

You can read all about these spooky elections here mcimaps.com/halloween-20...

No state has seen a bigger shift in the party affiliation of county coroners than Arkansas

In 2017, Democrats dominated the office. Now in 2025 the GOP has 3x the offices. A vast majority of this is party switching or retirements.

More coroner maps in coming days 🎃

The great 2025 Coroner Elections breakdown is almost done. 🎃

Thursday or Friday, we will see how all these dark purple counties voted in their races for county coroner!

You can read my 2021 breakdown here and guess which areas changed parties mcimaps.com/halloween-20...

Today in Akron, Ohio, as well as in several other towns, kids will be going Trick or Treating tonight 🎃🍭

Several townships in the Midwest, especially in the suburbs south of Cleveland, designate official trick or treat days, rather than simply go with Halloween

Day 19 of mapping #CoronerElections for Halloween

Mississippi used to be heavily Democratic down-ballot, and that was reflected in coroner posts.

By 2023, however, things had flipped, thanks largely to retirements or party switching. Only a few incumbents actually lost

Day 18 of mapping #CoronerElections for Halloween 🎃

In 2023, Democrats flipped the coroner post in just 1 county in Mississippi's elections

In Pike County, David Taylor, the owner of a local funeral home, defeated deputy coroner Chan Thomas, who was trying to hold the office for his retiring boss

Meant to post yesterday!

Day 17 of mapping #CoronerElections for Halloween 🎃

Montana is a state where a vast majority of counties elect the office of "Sheriff & Coroner."

In addition, a batch of counties elect coroner non-partisan. Only 9 counties do partisan elections.

Day 16 of mapping #CoronerElections for Halloween 🎃

In 2020, Lake County, IL - one of Chicago's "Collar Counties" - saw DEMs sweep local offices, ousting the Republican Coroner & State Attorney.

This continued the long trend of down-ballots catching up with President top-lines

Day 15 of mapping #CoronerElections for Halloween 🎃

New York State still has several upstate counties that have elected coroners. Several actually elect multiple coroners to districts! This is as of 2021, and I will have a 2025 update later this month

Day 14 (I'm a day late) of mapping #CoronerElections for Halloween 🎃

A crazy example of ticket splitting at the local level. In 2019, Webster County elected a Democrat to its open coroner post while at the same time voting heavily GOP for Governor
October 16, 2025 at 1:07 AM
Day 13 of mapping #CoronerElections for Halloween 🎃

In 2023, incumbent Democratic Coroner Mack Wilemon opted to run for re-election as a NPA. This worked out for him, leading to his victory in a county that went Republican by almost 50 points in the #MSGov race

Day 12 of mapping #CoronerElections for Halloween 🎃

In 2018, a crazy dynamic played out in the Butler County, Alabama coroner election. Incumbent Wayne Garlock lose his re-election in the Democratic primary. But then he WON as a write-in that November!

Day 11 of #MappingCoroner elections for Halloween 🎃

The 2017 Primary for Orleans Coroner sparked my fascination with this office.

That year, Dwight McKenna, previously in jail for tax evasion, won the office of coroner when the incumbent opted to abandon his own re-election

The Maduro folks, of course, published false results and claimed victory. Their totals are below. What is especially notable is that their totals were virtually impossible, with each candidate getting a perfect 10th of a percent of the vote, a statistical impossibility
October 12, 2025 at 12:36 AM
The opposition knew the Maduro regime would report false results, so democracy activists coordinated efforts to copy the ballot tally sheets from polling stations and post them to a central hub

Those tallies showed the opposition easily defeated Maduro

Day 10 of mapping #CoronerElections for Halloween 🎃

In 2023, Lousiana held its state and county elections. The state is home to a very large number of people who run and get elected coroner as NPA candidates, holding 18 posts

Democrats are down to 3....
October 11, 2025 at 2:02 AM
I wrote about these results back in Halloween of 2023

Most of the party flips were either party switches or incumbents retiring. This brought the office more into the partisan leaning of the top of the ticket

Details here mcimaps.substack.com/p/issue-136-...

Day 9 of mapping #CoronerElections for Halloween 🎃

Heading into the 2022 midterms, Kentucky had more Democratic coroners than Republicans. However, in that year's races, Republicans flipped 26 offices!

However, only FOUR of these were incumbents being defeated. Details below

Today is “Leif Erikson Day” in America

Every October 9th celebrates the Norse explorer who led, as best we know, the first European expedition to North America, 400+ years before Columbus

This fact is woefully overlooked in American history classes
October 9, 2025 at 4:08 PM
Day 8 of mapping #CoronerElections for Halloween 🎃

In 2017, longtime Democratic coroner Gregory Rohanna lost by just EIGHT VOTES as he ran for re-election.

His loss to funeral home director Gene Rush came as the once-Democratic county went from McCain +1 to Trump +30
