The Alberta NDP has introduced crucial legislation to protect the Rocky Mountains from coal mining. Our Proposal The Eastern Slopes Protection Act • Permanently ban coal mining and exploration in Category 1 and 2 lands. • Halt new mining and exploration in Category 3 and 4 lands until a comprehensive regional plan is developed. • Ensure thorough consultation with Albertans about the future of these lands. History of the Bill • The NDP has now tabled this crucial environmental protection act three times. In April 2021, the bill received unanimous initial approval from both NDP and UCP MLAs at the committee • However, the UCP government has repeatedly refused to bring it to a final vote, effectively stalling its progress. • We introduced the bill in the Legislature again in May 2024.
