Decided to watch the Community Review Board meeting last night and casually found out that the TBI raided the files of the Butler Snow lawyers that were investigating the whistleblower report. Used a Robertson county judge and the mayor's office hasn't told anyone. 🦞

Among them: eight black Jeep Wranglers, six Honda Accords, an ambulance, and a yellow Ford Fiesta with a vanity plate. This trove of real-time vehicle data, collected by one of Motorola’s ALPR systems, is meant to be accessible by law enforcement. However, a flaw discovered by a security researcher has exposed live video feeds and detailed records of passing vehicles, revealing the staggering scale of surveillance enabled by this widespread technology.

As MNPD revives police athletic league and defends occupying "high crime" areas in the name of community policing, I beg that we have long memories and interrupt the cycle of dueling realities; one experienced and ignored, the other contrived for a negative peace.
POLICING SOCIAL UPHEAVAL directed by attorney Kennetha Sawyers, has the power to review complaints against police officers and monitor police activities. The second is an investigation by the Department of Justice into allegations that off-duty police officers, moonlighting as private security guards, had beaten Hispanic migrant workers, stolen their money, and otherwise mistreated them. These investigations both got off the ground as I was conducting my research, and await completion. -The allegations of the mistreatment of Hispanic migrants rocked the city in the fall of 1999 and spring of 2000, with calls coming for the resignation of Police Chief Turner, himself an African American, for failure to manage the department properly. The allegations first surfaced on the front page of the Nashville Scene. Reporters conducted a six-month investigation into the abuse of Hispanic migrants by a private security firm with ties to the Nashville police department. 43 The company opened in 1996, and the owners disbanded it in 1999, as the Nashville Scene inquiry gathered steam. Scene journalist Willy Stern reported that a private security firm, Detection Services Incorporated, authorized the illegal towing of Hispanics' cars, robbed Hispanic mi-grants, and beat them. The primary focus of this extralegal activity was on illegal aliens, who officers knew could not complain because they faced the threat of deportation. A lengthy excerpt from the article helps convey the nature of the allegations and the racist venom of some of the officers: NEIL WEBSDALE POLICING THE POOR FROM SLAVE PLANTATION TO PUBLIC HOUSING While many applaud the apparent successes of community and saturation policing, Neil Websdale contends instead that such law enforcement initiatives oppress rather than protect the poor, particularly African Americans in large urban centers. Based on a groundbreaking ethnographic study of public housing projects in Nashville, Tennessee, he argues persuasively that community policing is a critical component of a criminal justice juggernaut designed to manage or regulate stigmatized populations, much like slave patrols served as agents for social control on Southern plantations. In a work that is sure to stir controversy and heated debate, Websdale draws on extensive field research, documentary sources, and interviews to illuminate how a criminal justice system deeply rooted in racism and slavery destroys the black family, creates a form of selective breeding, and undermines the civil rights gains of the 1960s. Unlike previous studies of community policing, which analyze programs through the lens of law enforcement, this book focuses on the history, experiences, and perspectives of the people whose lives are most affected by today's policing strategies. Skillfully blending the voices of project residents with a rich synthesis of historical, sociological, and criminological analysis, Websdale describes the situational, cultural, and economic circumstances of Nashville's poor; examines the policing of social upheaval by detailing events in the 1997 looting and burning of the Dollar General Store; considers African American kinship systems and the special circumstances of battered women; and discusses why the vice trades -- prostitution and selling drugs -- thrive in public housing projects. Policing the Poor is a much-needed balance to prevailing optimistic views on the effectiveness of this new method of law enforcement.
