Several studies reflect elements of the structured approach of cognitive apprenticeship in introducing pre-service teachers to historical thinking concepts. Through this process, complex skills are broken down into more manageable steps within the apprentice’s ability level.

Despite this, history can be taught in ways that develop students' critical thinking skills. Critical thinking is a higher form of mental processing involving "purpose-driven, effortful judgments based on evidence and reasons essential to productive learning, decision making, and problem-solving."
