privacy, security, and compliance; university administration; the liberal arts
it's really kind of a problem that aside from specialist press and sometimes local outlets, only the right-wing media picks up stories like this.

An appropriate response to the administration would be that the courts have clearly established that ICE/CBP actions go well beyond "law enforcement activity" and their established pattern of indiscriminate violence absolutely constitutes a life-safety emergency wherever they show up

It's particularly strange for them to minimize equity risk while staking the future of the entire institution on a spectacularly high-risk bet that it can make billions of dollars back with molecular engineering and quantum science, two fields UChicago had basically no existing strength in

I'm also not convinced that changing its investment stance away from equities after 2008 is a strategy that would have had Merton Miller's approval

I think it's probably not a good thing that the University of Chicago, facing existential financial calamity, jumped on the crypto bandwagon in 2021 and is apparently committed to hodling

This feels like a very interesting bit of history that I've seen mentioned almost in passing, like here in Deutscher's Trotsky biography, relying entirely on primary sources without much analysis. You can kinda see how the idea of Lenin as German agent was a popular one

like the fact that Israel has historically used exactly these torture techniques (and other, more graphic ones) is very well established

It's hard to convey just how far away and isolated this neighborhood is from the rest of the city and metro, especially from Broadview or from the north side neighborhoods that the news has focused on. It's a good bet that just about everybody in these photos lives or works in the neighborhood.

Just to be clear, this is part of the training that NU requires its students to comply with. The plain errors of fact, though, distract from the broader issue, which is that freedom of academic inquiry is incompatible with mandatory adherence to any particular empirical claims.

yeah it's Escape from Freedom. One of the better psychoanalytic treatments of fascism imo. There's actually a pretty good gloss of it in a freely available book by C. Jon Delogu pitched at an audience not familiar with psychoanalysis

Yep, and indeed that's exactly what Kaplan expands on in the next paragraph! I didn't appreciate when I first encountered it how much these insights would be lacking out there in the world
April 4, 2025 at 4:28 PM
in my utopian society we would all be inoculated against the Law of the Instrument by reading Abraham Kaplan's The Conduct of Inquiry as part of our universal liberal arts education

yeah this document bears no resemblance to actual economics at all. But it sure does show that the people responsible for this travesty are exactly the arrogant idiots you'd think they are. They think they found a flaw that lets them throw out all of international economics!

I'd say the caning of Sumner is an example of what I'm talking about. It caused a massive outrage both in the Senate and in the population as a whole across the North, and had actual consequences for Brooks. And like, find me the member of Congress today who would have this response

wow. The NYT journalist is scandalized that law scholars are discussing genocide in Palestine. I guess they think publicly entertaining the possibility of agreeing with the International Court of Justice should be grounds for dismissal at Yale Law.

who are these tv guys who never took international economics. a currency union by definition means giving up *sovereign* monetary policy
