Primary lesson of anti-anti-filibuster sentiment that there is no social institution, no matter how arbitrary, unintentional, recent, or destructive, that will not immediately attract a swarm of defenders who confidently proclaim that it is the necessary wisdom of the ages.

My first thought was, “How could anyone be dumb enough to believe this?” And then I realized that this is like the obvious grammatical errors in Nigerian prince scam emails.

I think there may be a danger in assuming that the people who told us to “listen to conservative voices” were making an earnest attempt to read the room. My suspicion is that these people were themselves reactionaries.
