I have started to read biographies on late 19th century Black leaders who dealt with emergence of Jim Crow. I'm starting with a pair of books that I won in graduate school: Louis Harlan's 2-volume biography of Booker T. Washington. Published in 1972, it really holds up well.

Slugg by Tony Lewis Jr. lovingly portrays his community at Hanover Place NW in his memoir as he explores how he avoided jail and became a community activist. Lewis’ father was Rayful Edmond’s chief assistant sentenced to life imprisonment at a federal prison in CA.
