I'm reading The Hero of This Book right now (at the recommendation of a British acquaintance I'd asked about place-based, atmospheric novels set in London) & it's just so outstandingly good (my friend's words, first), delightfully digressive, & might finally teach me how to write fiction myself!

Not quite an answer, but someone asked a similar question on r/Scrivener a week ago (though not re academic writing specifically). Overall: no, Scrivener's still the best. There are a few workable alternatives, but not the slightest consensus re which, or if it's even worth trying out others.

In Hong Kong people use the MTR exits for wayfinding & will meet friends at K13 or C5 way more than "on the northeast corner of such-and-such and somethingth." Arguably HK is denser than the Bay (& I bet people would need an educational ad campaign to get in the habit of using exits like this) but..

Chancellor Crystal Hines Martin of Hinds County, Mississippi has issued a prior restraint order so ludicrously unconstitutional it’s only consistent with deliberate misconduct or abject ignorance of the relevant law. Disgraceful and lawless.

Wow: City of Clarksdale, Mississippi got a court order yesterday directing a newspaper to delete an editorial criticizing city officials -- without a hearing. Here's the TRO issuing the prior restraint:

If we want better fashion culture in the US, we have to lower the cost of housing and commercial real estate, support independent craftspeople, build denser neighborhoods, improve walkability, and get rid of overly restrictive zoning laws. Let kook culture thrive.

Best thing about Stanford is you can brag about going to a school so prestigious it has its own private gates to hell. I have a soft spot for quotes-as-emphasis, so my 2nd favorite thing was the parking payment machine that read THIS MACHINE GIVES "NO CHANGE" for years. 3rd fave, I'll have to think

I have a hundred helpful suggestions, none of which I've ever been able to implement for long enough to really know what I'm talking about. But as a West Coaster, spending a week or two in an east-of-me time zone is the easiest way.

Using Freedom.to to block prime internet distractions also helps.
