Beyond the tourist sites that lure millions to #Japan—the temples, dazzling city cores, & national parks—sprawls a world few outsiders see: a rural landscape stripped of people & steeped in loneliness. An @outofedenwalk dispatch from a Japanese ghostlands. https://t.co/hFnCWu0yz7

Went to @indiana-dunes.bsky.social Great Marsh in Beverly Shores to check out some migrating birds. I had better luck in the herpetology department.

I can’t imagine any group less qualified to make judgements about managing a sprawling, ecologically sensitive, and high-traffic National Park than a tech billionaire and a cadre of trollish engineers who’ve never touched grass (or sedge or rush).

Call your reps to demand they save IDNP from DOGE!

Asian carp & their voracious appetite in me would cause irreparable damage to my fisheries. In the Mississippi River where they have taken over, Asian carp are 95% of biomass. Bye bye perch, walleye, whitefish and more. Brandon Road project must move forward as it is the choke-point 🌊🌊😳
Today, Gov Pritzker announced Illinois is postponing construction of a long-awaited project to stop the movement of invasive carp upstream into the Great Lakes, with the Illinois DNR anticipating a lack of federal funding as the Trump admin. withholds $117 million in grants. For @chicagotribune.com:
Pritzker delays start of invasive carp project at Brandon Road in Joliet amid federal funding concerns
Experts want to install layered technologies at a “critical pinch point” of the Des Plaines River to try and stop silver and bighead carp from getting to Lake Michigan.

Skunk cabbage in the Great Marsh just below the Dune Ridge trail. And one of my favorites--a sandhill crane and red-winged blackbird facing off at Cowles Bog. The crane had been raiding the red-winged blackbirds nests.

Great day for checking out winter wildlife at @indiana-dunes.bsky.social state and national parks. Started the day at the state park where trail 2/10 sounded like a construction zone from all the woodpeckers. Continued at the Kemil Beach Dune Ridge trail. #birds #wildlife #nature #photography

I’m an educator that’s migrating over here from Twitter. For the past 7-8 years, I’ve built connections through NatGeo education and Fulbright.

I hope that this space turns into one of collaboration and propping each other up.

I love nature and am working to get my students to care as well.
