Michigan lawmakers just made a HISTORIC investment in guaranteed income programs.

By investing $270 million in #RxKids, they will transform what's possible for 30,000 families a year.

NEW: Alameda is testing whether providing $1,000 per month in unconditional cash payments will reduce economic instability for low-income residents. At the pilot's midpoint, data shows that the recipients are indeed more financially stable.

We're excited to welcome Howard County Executive Calvin Ball as our newest CGI member this week!

Howard County recently launched a new guaranteed income pilot program to look at the impact of 20 families receiving $1,000 a month in unrestricted cash payments for one full year.

We've already seen from the results of Birmingham's pilot program that cash payment policies work for Alabama families. This week, we're excited to keep the momentum around guaranteed income going in Alabama and welcome Aliceville's Mayor Terrence E. Windham to MGI!

Local leaders are closest to our constituents, and we understand that communities have been pushed into poverty by the billions of dollars that have been invested in carceral systems, the billions we’ve lost from our schools, the high cost of health care, and the ongoing crisis of skyrocketing food and housing costs and stagnant wages. At a time when nearly 2 in 3 Americans can’t afford a single $500 emergency, a lot of households are close to the brink. In an independent research study that MGI commissioned on child outcomes, one mother described how guaranteed income allowed her to laugh and talk with her daughters, instead of “standing in the bathroom for an hour, crying, trying to figure out how I’m going to pay this bill. How are we going to eat? Is this my last day having a meal?” We don’t need brain scans to deduce that children have a better opportunity to thrive in a home where parents are not emotionally overwhelmed by struggling to meet basic survival needs. Guaranteed income disrupts poverty. It’s really that simple, and our 250+ members will keep fighting for the financial stability of families."
