Members of the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition marched in this year’s Labor Day Parade to recognize the impact of the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire.

After that tragedy, New York State's labor laws were transformed due to the tireless efforts of factory worker activists and suffragists.

Still, hope for government policy on pollution mitigation should not be completely abandoned. In the absence of federal leadership, city and state policy takes precedence. Local candidates running against corporate or fossil fuel interests can greatly benefit from union-led voter turnout efforts.

An example of this has been playing out this year at REI after executives blocked two REI Union-backed environmental leaders from appearing on the ballot for Board of Director elections. A union-led campaign persuaded members of the consumer co-operative to reject the corporate-backed candidates.

Hearst Union (Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE)) finally ratified their first contract with the publisher in 2023 after a two-year-long fight. Still, the magazine publishing industry remains vulnerable to rampant layoffs, including at Hearst:

Despite public support for unions increasing in recent years in the U.S., union membership is still in decline — even in New York, which generally has higher union density than a majority of the country. 🧵

Critics question how these bills would be enforced. Supporters argue that corporations won't voluntarily adopt practices favorable to the environment and labor.

But these recent election upsets exemplify the grit and determination required to even propose environmental and human-centered policies.

This bill, which would require companies doing business in NY to map their supply chains, adhere to fair wage laws and report progress on climate targets, has languished in Albany, but was amended and reintroduced this past March. A similar bill was introduced this year in California: bit.ly/4lrYnrS

Along with pursuing ethics reform and expanding voting access — including giving New York early voting days — Senator Biaggi & Assemblymember Kelles introduced the “Fashion Act” with the intent of holding large fashion brands ($100+ million in revenues) responsible for their role in climate change.

In 2018, progressive attorney Alessandra Biaggi beat a powerful NY State senator who, with other Democrats, betrayed his party to share power with Republicans. This prevented progressive priorities from becoming law. Biaggi faced $2 million in opposition spending against her $300,000 and still won.

Those who follow this account may be familiar with the “Fashion Act,” a bill introduced in the NY State Legislature back in 2022 that has since been widely debated in the fashion industry.

It may be less known that the bill was proposed by the winner of another stunning NY primary election upset. 🧵

These are bales of discarded clothing in a New Jersey warehouse run by a collection service that manages donation bins.

The photo, taken last summer, shows just one row of several aisles piled high ready to be transported. Bales of new donations will be packed and stacked just as high the next day.
