My weekend assignment: Signing tip-in sheets, which will then go to Mark Oshiro, then bound into the books as they are printed. This edition is for indie bookstores, as you can see on the pages. No details when/how to order yet. At least my hand is better enough to sign! (my usual scrawl, anyway)

A busy week ahead! Team PJOTV continues to edit episodes of s2 while outlining scripts for s3. They're working from an outline I provided, breaking Titan's Curse into episodic structure. I'm giving notes at each stage. Also working on the 3rd new Percy novel + 3 other things I can't talk about yet!

I get wanting 'Solangelo' on screen. I'd like to see that too, but that is so very VERY far into the future that it's not something I can even make a guess about. Actors age much more quickly than we can film. Casting a character earlier is tricky, because they will age out of the part too fast. If you figure each season of TV takes a MINIMUM of a year to produce, possibly closer to two years, and the Last Olympian would be four more seasons away, and the Blood of Olympus would be hypothetically nine more seasons away... well, you can do the math. That's a long time.
And that's assuming we ever get that far into the adaptation process, which isn't something anyone can predict right now.

Glad you've enjoyed the show! No, I don't ever have a wish list for casting. Most of the actors we find, especially the young actors, aren't people l've heard of before. I just try to keep an open mind and watch all the tapes submitted. The process is run by our casting director. They are the person who puts out calls for auditions, collects the tapes, presents them to us (the producers) and coordinates all communications with actors and agents. It is a massive job and quite specialized, but it's important that there is only one point of contact for everyone. I've gained a great deal of respect for how hard casting directors work. I don't involve myself in the casting until the casting director starts sending us tapes, so when people ask me, 'please, please cast me, as happens approximately 1,452,024 times a day, it's kind of wasted effort. The person you need to find and convince is the casting director.

I answer a lot of questions over on Goodreads, but if you don't use the site, here are some screenshots of answers I have given in the past re. the ever-popular topic of casting. Note: all were written before we got renewal for season 2 and 3, and it's too early for s3 casting info, but:

I can't give you any good news, I'm afraid. Most of the roles have to go to Canadian actors because we are filming in Canada. That's a provincial law and a requirement of the B.C. film board. So if you're not a Canadian citizen, it's already very, very difficult to be considered. Even the smallest of walk-on roles go to Canadian actors, and most of them do this for a living. Our quota of non-Canadian actors gets filled almost instantly. Secondly, acting is hard work that takes years to get good at. So if you are not already committed to acting for a living, have a history of roles, and have gotten yourself an agent, it's almost impossible to get considered. We don't really do open auditions, because there are already hundreds and thousands of working actors clamoring for parts, and they have already put in the work and know how to navigate the casting system, so the directors know they can do a good job. (Even the youngest actors have been doing this for years.) We did open auditions for some of the major roles at the very beginning of the process, but honestly, it wasn't even close. No one who wasn't already a committed actor even came near to competing against those actors who have made this their lives' work. So if you want to get cast in any show, there are no shortcuts. Put in the work. Years of hard work. Become an actor. Get a reputable agent. Then the agent will start walking you through the very difficult process of doing auditions. Work your way up from small parts to bigger parts. Acting, like writing a book, is something that sounds fun and cool to many people, but actually doing it requires much, much more work than most folks realize!

That is so far beyond hypothetical at this point it is impossible to answer. The only thing I could say is that IF we got to that point, many years in the future, it would need to be someone who is serious about acting and very good at it. That's true for all the roles. One thing I have learned doing PJO season one is how hard actors work and how much experience they have to have to do a good job. It's not something you can just step into with no experience. So whoever that person is, they are hopefully already devoting their life to acting, working on roles, getting an agent, and becoming the best actor they can be!

That's all hypothetical right now, since no one knows if a second season will be green-lighted. My guess is that the normal casting process would be followed, which is to have our casting director send out casting calls to talent agents, so the best way to be considered is to get very good at what you do, work really hard at whatever acting jobs you can get, then find a reputable agent who believes in you and will help you submit for the roles you're interested in. It's extremely difficult for someone un-agented to get picked for a part, even if there is an open casting call, because you are competing against young professional actors who have gone through that process and have a lot more experience. From what l've seen, it's a tough business to crack into!

This is a question we get a lot, but extras are jobs that go to professional actors in the place where we film, because there are many national, regional, and union rules that require this.
For instance, the extras in season one were 99.9% actors who live and work in Vancouver, because that's where we filmed most of the show. We can't fly people in from around the world just so they can appear on film for a day, as fun as that sounds! Having said that, a lot of the extras who DO appear in the show are fans of the books. It's always a delight to meet them.
