When I met her, I got it. I got what people meant when they said someone could light up a room. Confident and happy, with the most radiant smile I’ve ever seen. She had an easy way about her. She reminded me of lofi jazz in a coffee shop. comfortable yet lively. It was never a secret that I was attracted to her. In every way that a person could be attracted to another person. She made it clear, in her gentle way, that she didn’t want to start a relationship and I respected that. I didn’t push. But I made it known that my door would always be open to her. One thousand cups of coffee and benign conversations later, I hug her goodbye after a lunch date between two friends. Something we’ve done so many times before. Except this time, when my arms loosen from the embrace, she lingers. Something has changed. She’s softened. The moment is brief but I seize it, not knowing if she’ll give me this chance again. There are too many atoms between us and I dip my head to devour the space. Her lips are soft. Supple. A tenderness that I’m not prepared for. A hesitation that stands in contrast against the sure and deliberate personality that I’ve become familiar with. But as we stand here, she warms to me. Greedier for depth that I’m all too willing to give. We tumble through the cafe floor, through doors and walls and space. She is in my bed. With me. Underneath me. Around me. I drive. Over and over. and she clings to me. Pulls me into her until there’s nothing between us. Closer, still. We collapse into each other with the magnitude of dying stars. Hold each other tight on the other side of oblivion. And knowing the answer will be more profound than I can imagine, I ask, “What changed?”
