Super Sunday. Good day for Football. Bad day for Chickens.

Indeed, every day is a bad day for Chickens. While you gnosh on wings today I offer this annual reminder that in the US, we lay, hatch, grow, slaughter, bring to market, buy, cook, and eat, one million chickens per hour.

At the moment, mansion-sized Asteroid 2024-YR4 has a one-in-fifty chance of hitting Earth in the next eight years.

Now might be a bad time to reduce spending on Science. Just sayin’.

Etymology break.

- "Clumsy" is first recorded (only) at end of the 1500s
- Originally, "acting as if numbed"
- From now-obsolete Middle English verb, "clumse," "to be made numb with cold"
- Ulterior roots may be Scandivanian (cf. Old Norse "klumsa," "to make speechless")

Bring back "clumse"!

The Overkill hypothesis, esp. in Australia, has long wondered about the ecological and biodiversity changes resulting from Terminal Pleistocene mass extinction in the plant kingdom. Here we're gaining some new fine-grained tools to study this issue at the species level. #envhist

How do we move beyond our myopic focus on CO2 as the index of our harms to the world?

What can we do to heal the whole biosphere?

And what role is played by water-as-verb, forest-as-verb, ocean-as-verb?

We've reached 1.5°C global warming.
With current policies, we're heading for a catastrophic 2.7°C warming.
A new review paper in Science shows: this would change the Arctic 'beyond recognition', with knock-on effects (like rising seas) around the world. 🌊

Relatively hardy and able to vibrate their bodies to create heat, #bumblebees are able to forage in cooler temperatures than honey bees.
They can begin foraging earlier in the day and continue later into the evening.

I've been encountering over the past few days the claim that the planet is warming twice as fast as predicted. This is entirely untruthful and unhelpful.
The planet is warming AS fast as predicted, which is cause enough for dramatic action.

The truth is bad enough!
