Yes, but very few and they are usually installed specifically to serve only one appliance (like an oven, clothes dryer, etc.) So they couldn't be used to also plug in a solar system.

There's generally no problem attaching Solar to a 120v outlet as long as the solar system is small enough.

Yeah. I mean someone, somewhere is going to burn their house down with one of these eventually. But to describe them as a 'scam' that are uniquely dangerous, I just don't get. I suspect he's thinking of janky DIY systems that people have put together over the years.

I think the typical install of one of these systems cuts an electrical bill around 10-20% and pays for itself in 3-4 years.
This isn't going to "fix" climate change. But it's a small progress that can quickly serve people who can't put in whole house systems, renters, etc.

Well, people do crazy dangerous stuff with their wiring all the time.
I don't quite get your argument that these systems are somehow uniquely dangerous. Not saying nothing bad will ever happen. But they seem way safer than all kinds of products that people use everyday.

My understanding is that the laws allowing these systems require them to be UL listed, so well inspected if nothing else.

The power load is well below a small hair dryer or space heater. Doesn't mean there won't be any issues. But I don't see why these systems are uniquely dangerous.

Well, it's a small scale solar system that can be installed by the resident and plugs into a wall plug. They're not intended to cover large amounts of power, but work to reduce some of the person's energy cost. They are quite popular in Europe and are legal in Utah now, soon in several other states.

Seems to me the fire risk is coming from cheap battery manufacturers which could be a concern here. Though I think that is going to be a growing issue for a lot of technologies as we put batteries into everything in the coming years. Not sure that plug in solar needs some special consideration here.

My understanding is that these systems are designed and permitted to generate <1kw. So they definitely would work with US wiring infrastructure (and are already doing so at least in Utah.)
December 9, 2025 at 12:39 AM
Genuine question - what is so different about US housing stock and regulations that make these systems more dangerous than in the European context?

Regardless of anything else, thank you for pushing the city to follow the law even if they largely decided to use their internal appeal process to ignore it. It has to be frustrating and a lot of work to go thru this process. Keep fighting the good fight. We really appreciate it!

We don't perceive temperature like a thermometer does. We perceive if heat is leaving or entering the skin. This is why touching something that conducts heat quickly, like metal, feels colder than another material even though they're the same temperature.
