Stage Beauty (2004) - Actually so fun! Lots of crossy action and it didn't try to be too revisionist with the gender fuckery of Restoration London. Beautiful gowns and the supporting cast were really strong, Rupert Everett as Charles II and Richard Griffith's aristo perv were particular highlights.

Was ready with my screenshot to say 'mfw charlie kirk' but several posters beat me to it, it's interesting how literally every frame of her reaction is just dripping disgust, it looks like an animation test for Inside Out 3

Belle de Jour (1967) - Watched on VHS, it was interesting seeing the reviews on the back saying stuff like 'sexy and provocative' 'erotic and alluring' when this is one of the most unerotic movies I've seen? That's the point right? Her estrangement from her own desire. Anyway CD is beautiful as ever

'Mood Indigo' - (L'Écume des jours) 2013 - 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' meets 'Taxidermia'; one of the most surreal films I've seen, maybe ever. Apparently the director drove everyone made during filming and I can 100% see it. A BIG swing and insane vision, worth watching just for that

'In the Mood for Love' (2000) - Cannot believe this is a 21st century movie! Chromatic storytelling was out of this world, as someone who has a fixation for visual storytelling in costumes and sets I was mesmerised trying to see all the ways celadon and cinnabar could be blended in one shot.

'Love and Friendship' (2016) - Was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did, with most Austen media I go in expecting froth and frocks and not much else, but turns out those things can make a highly enjoyable film.

'Friendship's Death' (1987) - A prescient stageplay parable. Containing multitudes means sitting with the profound, inhumane sadness and terror of the 20th century's experiment in the Middle East that continues to decimate cities and populations, while also being spellbound by Swinton's kaftans.

'Death on the Nile' (1978) - I know 'on the' is a weak connecton but I make the rules! This was a treat, watched it on VHS as well so it was extra nostalgic. Like the other 70's Poirot, the cast is almost obscenely stacked with stars - but still Maggie Smith somehow manages to tower triumphant 🥹

'Picnic on the Grass' (1959) - On paper I was on board with this, a 'back to nature' parable for the Atomic Age & the hubris of eugenics, but it's held back by its at times crass delivery and hamfisted plot. Some painterly shots and the pastoral scenery were a welcome respite from the noisy tedium.

'Picnic at Hanging Rock' (1975) - Had been on my radar for like 10 years and this was an ideal chance to watch. Just as lush and unsettling as I'd hoped. Gorgeous soundtrack that suits the mood so perfectly and the opening 30 minutes are some of the most perfect cinema I've seen in a long time.

'Hanging Garden' (2005) - I expected a slightly odd-ball family comedy-drama and hooooo boy was I mistaken. From the opening shot and the amazing camera work in the first 10 mins I knew I was in for a wild ride and just kept escalating, felt like I was being slapped in the face every 3 minutes. Rad.

'Moon Garden' (2022) - markedly impressive for an indie film. Reminiscent of other psychadelic "young girl processing stuff" movies: 'Mirror Mask', 'The Fall', 'The Adventures of Baron von Munchausen', 'Coraline' - sadly not as memorable as any of them. Also, that actress was too young!

Started off [arbitrarily] with Zeffirelli's 'Brother Sun and Sister Moon' (1972) - a lot of the reviews I saw really panned it for its twee 'counter cultural' framing but that's the point, no? There were some laugh out loud one-liners that I wasn't expecting AND THE CLOTHES & SCENERY 🤩❤️
