I recently carved this 57lb bow from a piece of Pacific yew from the North Cascades and it's a joy to shoot

Salmon don't need any more problems, but African Clawed Frogs might be a new one. Our newly-published experiment shows that these frogs easily chow down on eggs, alevin, and fry from multiple salmon species

HOW we study biodiversity shapes WHAT we understand about biodiversity

We show that trait variability (1) within individuals, (2) among individuals of the same species, and (3) between species changes what we understand about evolution to changing environments

Emerging from four days pulling dozens of bird song recorders and wildlife cameras from our three coastal TNC forest preserves. I'm grateful to study biodiversity in one of the most beautiful landscapes on Earth. These data will help us understand how wildlife responds to forest restoration

Housing or trees? Science says "why not both?"

🌲 🏡 🏢 🌲

We need housing. We also needs trees. Our new study across western Washington finds gaining housing at the expense of trees is not inevitable.

💚🐢My research now touches everything from solar panels to salmon recovery, but one of my first and forever science loves are turtles. And today is a very happy World Turtle Day

This beauty is one of the many stunning western pond turtles I've had the privilege of working with

Climate change? Land use? Both? "Nature isn't really our friend, is it?"

Yesterday's Doonesbury captures a common sentiment and underscores how climate change is overemphasized when many natural challenges are due to land use decisions

Field Prep!

Deploying dozens of acoustic recorders for birds and cameras for mammals (and a dash of AI) to study what biodiversity looks like in Pacific Northwest forests that are in various stages of transition out of industrial timber harvest

Always learning - I'm a slow reader with books because I tend to bounce around multiple at a time. I enjoy letting the ideas from different books have a conversation in my noggin, even if wasn't the authors' intention

These are the books I've been working through recently

It's World Wildlife Day and I remain ever grateful for the amazing species I get to coexist with and play a small part in protecting. And I'm so appreciative of the many friends and colleagues who dedicate their lives to making sure our existence is enriched by bountiful wildlife.

I know less about football than I do about raptors, so this superbOwl I'm all about those eagles

I cut my teeth in conservation by working with raptors! Lots of lovely science on birds of prey at Peregrine Fund and Cornell

Fires like those in Los Angeles are a result of our housing practices. They're absolutely caused by climate change, but also land use habits. Scientists for decades have been highlighting this growing problem

Love that Olympia's city staff drive vehicles decorated in winter garb and lights across the different neighborhoods each year. Amazing way to celebrate city employees and the holiday season ❄️☃️🧑‍🎄🎄🚒🚔🚚

Love and feelings are not typically associated with science or scientists. But I deeply appreciated the past week gathering with @nature.org scientists from around the world where LOVE was a message echoed throughout many conversations

🧠 and 💚 help scientists tackle the most pressing problems on 🌏
