Mario Odyssey had 2D Super Mario Bros segments all over the place. With Minecraft and Roblox, is retro aesthetic really meaningful? Or is that just how some games look? Interesting that “retro" games don’t really exist like they used to 10, 15 years ago.

Does “retro” just mean "low poly" and "pixel based”?
“Indie rock” used to mean something, but Vampire Weekend and Arcade Fire were “indie rock” bands with No 1 albums and grammies
Is Arkham Asylum an older game but still more or less modern? Do kids really think Half Life 2 is “retro”?

One aspect missing here - I’m 41. Stuff I grew up with was bluntly “old” and “retro” 20 years ago. I’ve already gone through that existential trip, and maybe I had to face that truth sooner than 20-something’s today. Therefore this isn’t my question to answer, but this is freeing actually
Genuine question - do "retro" video games really exist any more? When I started reviewing "retro" games in 2007, Mario World was 16 years old. That's how old New Super Mario Bros, Minecraft, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2, Arkham Asylum, and RE5 are now. Are they considered "old" but not “retro"?
