In which Zest makes themself arguably useful.

It really is fun to play with class and role with a jester protagonist. They're certainly not noble, but have more privileges and freedoms than most servants, so they kinda hang out between roles.

I danced between roles; imperiously ordering about those who thought of me as noble and helpfully unloading casks of wine alongside those who didn’t.

Compared to the thin light from way up high, across such elevation that I could hardly see it from its own shadow, I felt positively flirted with.

I rarely beg at the table for scraps. My hair can be quite soft if I’m fed the correct diet. I appreciate a good pat now and again. I do not do well with collars, but I have recently mastered my habit of chasing squirrels.”

Sinclair tossed the bottle into the street, surged forward, snatched at my hand, and pulled me away. As she dragged me off, I spared a glance for the woman on the street. She was not bleeding. As far as I could tell, her head was intact despite the impact of the bottle. She’d walk away from this with no worse than a bad headache in all likelihood. I spat blood in her direction as Sinclair led me away.

I hopped merrily into a starting position, arms aloft, and launched myself forward into a handspring. The handspring turned to cartwheels when laughter sprung from me like a high pressure leak in a dam. The giggling stayed with me until I arrived at the foot of the dais, at which point I stopped as abruptly as possible. I swung my arms around to maintain balance, hopping on one foot as if about to fall, before clicking my heels together and bowing sharply before the king.

A novel excerpt reading: I do not know what my face betrayed, but she looked at me oddly. “Does that make me silly?” “No.” The word came out delicately. Too soft. She gnawed on the inside of her cheek. That gesture and her downturned eyelashes reminded me of something, but I could not quite place it. Attempting to dredge up the memory almost distracted me from whatever emotion threatened to overtake me. “Do jesters ever marry?” Thessaly asked. Jesters are bedded, I wanted to say.
